Stress management returning as focus of Center for Healthy Living workshop series

Stress management is the focus of an upcoming workshop series offered by the Center for Healthy Living beginning Feb. 15. The six-week series will meet from noon to 12:50 p.m. on Wednesdays through March 22 in Stanley Coulter Hall, Room 102. There will not be a class during the week of spring break.

Led by Cheryl Laszynski, registered nurse, certified health and wellness coach at the Center for Healthy Living, the workshop series will help participants identify signs and symptoms of stress, understand sources of stress and develop coping techniques to manage their stress and help balance work and home life demands.

According to Laszynski, stress is one of the more prevalent topics in today’s society. She acknowledges that the majority of individuals are directly or indirectly affected by stress -- at work, home or both.

“Outside of the emotional toll stress can take on a person, the physical effects on our bodies are severe, too,” Laszynski says. “Symptoms of stress can present in a variety of ways, including headaches, dizziness, heart palpitations, muscle tension, pain or fatigue. It can cause both mental and physical exhaustion and also has been linked to leading causes of death due to heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, lung ailments and cancer.”

Throughout the sessions, Laszynski will share information on how mindfulness, self-care, relaxation techniques, laughter and building resilience can be used to help better manage busy lives and the associated stress that could result.

Workshops are available at no cost to benefits-eligible faculty and staff and spouses/adult dependents covered on a Purdue medical plan.
