Registration opens for 14th annual Garnet E. Peck Symposium in Pharmacy

The 14th annual Garnet E. Peck Symposium in Pharmacy will be held March 28-29 at Purdue, presented by the College of Pharmacy and the Department of Industrial and Physical Pharmacy.

Co-chaired by IPPH faculty members Lynne Taylor and Elizabeth Topp, the symposium’s theme is "Outside the Box: Celebrating the Life and Work of Stephen R. Byrn." The program will feature presentations by renowned pharmaceutical researchers from academia and industry, as well as poster sessions and presentations from graduate students.

Another featured event this year is the "Three Minute Thesis" competition, in which seven graduate students will pitch their thesis research to the audience in three minutes or less apiece. The audience will then vote to determine first, second and third places, and the winning students will receive up to $250 as a scholarship.

The symposium will begin with an opening reception and poster session from 5 to 7 p.m. March 28 at Purdue Memorial Union, East and West Faculty Lounges. The program is set for 8 a.m.-5 p.m. March 29 in Stewart Center, Room 218, and will open with a welcoming address from Craig Svensson, dean of the College of Pharmacy.

Presenters are:

* Peter York, professor of pharmacy, University of Bradford. "Peeping Under the Surface of Solid Dosage Systems: A 3D Microstructural Perspective."

* Chris Benmore, senior physicist, X-ray Science Division, Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory. "High Energy X-ray Diffraction from Amorphous Pharmaceuticals."

* Sister Zita Ekeocha, Medical Missionaries of Mary, Kilimanjaro School of Pharmacy. "Development and Challenges of Sustainable Medicine Program in Africa."

* George Zografi, senior consultant, Improved Pharma, and emeritus professor and former dean of the School of Pharmacy, University of Wisconsin. "The Relationships Between Water Vapor Sorption by Fragile Amorphous Solids and Their Glassy Structure."

* Eyal Barash, attorney, pharmaceutical patent counsel, Barash Law LLC. "The Expert Witness in Complex Patent Litigation."

* Sally Byrn, president, Improved Pharma, co-founder of SSCI, and former chief executive officer of Willowstone Family Services. "Building a Company: It’s Better to be Lucky than Good."

* Kari Clase, professor of technology leadership and innovation, and agricultural and biological engineering, director of Biotechnology Innovation and Regulatory Science Center, Purdue. "The Global Impact of the Biotechnology Innovation and Regulatory Science (BIRS) Program."

* Allen Templeton, assistant vice president of formulation sciences, Merck. "Purdue and Merck Partnership for Pharmaceutical Science Education in Africa."

The symposium will end at 6 p.m. with a special dinner honoring Byrn at Mackey Arena's Spurgeon Club. Those wishing to attend the dinner only have a registration option to do so.

The event honors the late Garnet E. Peck, professor emeritus of industrial and physical pharmacy, and his contributions to the pharmaceutical sciences, including the development of latex-based tablet coatings that have been used in the industry for more than 35 years.

The registration fee is $375 for the public; $250 for Purdue staff, faculty, postdocs and visiting scholars; and $175 for students. For individuals who wish to register for the dinner only, the cost is $45. The registration deadline is March 10.
