Proposals sought for Graduate Student Educational Research Symposium

The Graduate Student Education Council and the College of Education are inviting submissions for the 11th Annual Graduate Student Educational Research Symposium on March 27.

This year’s theme is “Knowledge to Action: Global and Local Education.” Graduate students from all departments at Purdue with research related to education are invited to submit a proposal. Presentations will be posters or seven-minute TEDx-style talks. Talks should loosely align with global and local education, although any topics will be accepted.

Posters will be judged for Best Poster awards, but the talks will not be judged. Proposals should be submitted here by Feb. 17.

The symposium will take place from 1:30 to 6 p.m. in Stewart Center, rooms 214 and 306. The keynote speaker will be Mitzi Lewison, professor of literacy, culture and language education at Indiana University. Lewison’s research interests include critical literacy, critical discourse analysis, teaching language arts in culturally diverse settings and exploring nontraditional, more empowering forms of professional development.

Lewison’s research focuses on investigating the problems and potential of using critical literacy practices in elementary and middle school classrooms, the multiple and often contradictory identities that students and teachers take on during literacy and math activities, and the issues surrounding the use of controversial children’s literature and topics in elementary classrooms.  She was the IU English director for two USAID projects in Afghanistan that ran through the Center for Social Studies and International Education and focused on rebuilding teacher education programs at 16 Afghan universities.

More information on the keynote speaker and presenters can be found here.
