Grand Prix seeking queen applicants in renewal of tradition

The Purdue Grand Prix Foundation, for the first time since 1994, will crown a Grand Prix queen this year, and the application period is open through 11:59 p.m. Friday (Feb. 3).

The application includes three essay questions, and depending on the number of eligible applicants, the foundation will select five to 10 finalists who will form the Grand Prix Court. Members of the Grand Prix Court will be chosen for their academic achievement, community involvement and extracurricular activities.

The queen will be selected from the Grand Prix Court based on a campus-wide vote on Boiler Link, the number of tickets the candidate sells and a vote by members of the Grand Prix Queen Selection Committee. That committee is composed of volunteers from the Grand Prix Foundation Senior Board, Junior Board and Grand Prix team members. This procedure departs from the previous method, which was selection by the Grand Prix drivers.

The hope in revitalizing the queen tradition, the foundation says, is to increase awareness of the Grand Prix Race among Purdue students and increase interest in attending the race. The Grand Prix queen will be responsible for promoting the race and the Grand Prix Foundation's mission of raising money for scholarships for Purdue students. The foundation will not be bringing back other Grand Prix queen traditions such as the queen kissing the winning driver or the Grand Prix Queen Fashion Show.

About the Grand Prix Foundation

The Grand Prix Foundation is a student organization at Purdue that exists to organize the annual Purdue Grand Prix kart race. Driven by our motto of “Students Helping Students,” the primary purpose of this annual event is to raise funds for over $10,000 in annual student scholarships. The Grand Prix annually draws over 50 student entries, competing for a spot in the 160-lap main feature. With each kart team consisting of a seven-member crew, over 350 participants are involved in the Grand Prix race. An event of this caliber requires a great deal of planning and work led by our volunteer staff of 10 Senior Board directors, two advisors, and a dedicated committee member staff.
