CIE to explore teaching, learning through new reading groups for faculty

The Teaching Academy and Center for Instructional Excellence are inviting faculty to join Purdue's inaugural faculty teaching and learning reading groups in the spring semester. These reading groups will bring together faculty from around the campus in small groups to discuss how recent books about the classroom and teaching and learning may inform what they do.

For the spring semester, participants will read "Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning" by Peter C. Brown, Henry L. Roediger III and Mark A. McDaniel. The book draws on discoveries in cognitive psychology to help in understanding how to promote effective learning strategies for students.

Participants will read the book over the course of the semester, meeting once each month to discuss the ideas/theories from the book and how they may apply to courses for the upcoming fall semester. Lunch will be provided.

Faculty who would like to participate during spring 2017 should fill out an online questionnaire by Jan. 18 and provide information about themselves and their availability (mark all possible days of availability).

Those who cannot make it this semester but are interested in faculty reading and learning communities, or who have suggestions for future books/topics, should contact Dan Guberman at DGuberma@purdue.edu.
