Center for Healthy Living workshop series to focus on stress management

Stress management is the focus of an upcoming workshop series offered by the Center for Healthy Living on Purdue's West Lafayette campus. The six-week session begins April 12 and meets on Wednesdays through May 17 from 1 to 1:50 p.m. in the Center for Healthy Living's conference room.

The workshop series will help participants identify signs and symptoms of stress, sources of stress and develop coping techniques to manage their stress and help balance work and home life demands.

According to Cheryl Laszynski, registered nurse, certified health and wellness coach at the Center for Healthy Living who will lead the series, stress is one of the more prevalent topics in today’s society.

“In today’s fast-paced world, a majority of individuals are directly or indirectly affected by stress -- at work, home or both,” she says. “Knowing that makes us realize that we are living in an unhealthy population as the mental and physical effects of stress on our bodies are severe."

 Symptoms of stress can present in a variety of ways, including:

* Headaches.
* Dizziness.
* Heart palpitations.
* Muscle tension.
* Pain.
* Fatigue.

“Stress can cause both mental and physical exhaustion and also has been linked to leading causes of death due to heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, lung ailments and cancer,” Laszynski says.

Throughout the sessions, Laszynski will share information on how mindfulness, self-care, relaxation techniques, laughter and building resilience can be used to help better manage busy lives and the associated stress that could result.

Workshops are available at no cost to benefits-eligible faculty and staff and spouses/adult dependents covered on a Purdue medical plan.
