BoilerApps provides app development services for faculty, staff

Purdue faculty and staff needing high-quality app development have a new on-campus option -- BoilerApps.

BoilerApps is an innovative initiative designed to provide fast, reliable and responsive service at a competitive cost, says Gerry McCartney, vice president for information technology and system chief information officer.

“Since BoilerApps is based at the Purdue Research Park and employs Purdue students and staff, we can work closely with our clients throughout the development process to ensure the final product meets their specific needs,” McCartney says.

BoilerApps was created by the Center for Environmental and Regulatory Information Systems and the College of Agriculture but its services are available to clients throughout the University, McCartney says.

Services available from BoilerApps include:

* Mobile app development for iOS and Android.

* Web app development for HTML, CSS, jQuery and PHP.

* Mapping app development for ESRI and ArcGIS.

“Apps are becoming increasingly essential in academics as scholars seek cost-effective ways to share their work with the widest possible audience,” McCartney says.

Student employees assist in all phases of the app development process, working under the direction of experienced, professional programmers. BoilerApps is a partner in the Pathmaker program initiated by McCartney. The Pathmaker program provides students across many majors with opportunities for paid internships in the local offices of major companies like Cisco, HPE and Evonik.

“BoilerApps is a tremendous professional development opportunity for students but also a chance for faculty and staff to harness the remarkable talent pool we have available right here at Purdue,” says Mike Hill, project manager and systems analyst for CERIS and one of the BoilerApps coordinators.
