Workshop to bring attention to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

Human Resources will host a family-friendly workshop focused on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder from noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 28 (Friday) in Rawls Hall, Room 2079.

The "ADHD 101" workshop will address information on recognizing, understanding and living with ADHD.

A lasting disorder based in the brain, ADHD affects many areas of life including school, work, social relations and emotional abilities. It can include characteristics such as lack of focus, distractibility, disorganization, procrastination, forgetfulness, hyperactivity, impulsivity and irritability. This workshop will help people consider when such problems are beyond what is expected for a child’s (or adult's) age and are creating problems that require additional attention. This seminar will be presented by Elizabeth Akey and Ankita Krishman of the Purdue Psychology Treatment and Research Clinics, a service of the Department of Psychological Sciences.

The presenters will provide information on evaluating and intervening for children or adults who may have ADHD. The workshop will address evidence-based treatments including focusing on positive reinforcement and structure, which are known to support healthy development and management of problems related to ADHD.

Registration is available online and is due (Thursday) Oct. 27. Limited seats are available; however, as a response to feedback, Human Resources is pleased to make this and future presentations available in WebEx. Those attending via WebEx should enter "familyfriendly" if prompted for a password when joining the meeting.

The family workshops are open to faculty, staff, students and spouses/same-sex domestic partners. Those attending are encouraged to bring lunch to eat while listening to the presentation. Time for asking questions and networking with other parents and caregivers will be offered.
