Time is running out as open enrollment deadline approaches

Faculty and staff who have not yet enrolled for their 2017 benefits have only three days left to do so. Enrollment ends at 6 p.m. EST Friday (Nov. 11). No changes to benefit plans will be accepted after that date unless there is a qualifying life event (change in family status).

Human Resources encourages employees to enroll now and keep a copy of the enrollment summary page for their records. Those who have already enrolled can review their elections and make any changes up to 6 p.m. EST Friday. Those who make changes should be sure to resubmit their enrollment.

The dedicated website for open enrollment 2017 provides all the need-to-know information for faculty and staff to ensure they make the best selections for themselves and their families. From the website, faculty and staff can access not only the specific how-tos of open enrollment but also medical and prescription information as well to help them select coverage best-suited to their needs.

Those who prefer face-to-face opportunities to discuss their plan selection still have the opportunity to do so. Walk-in labs are still available for hands-on assistance through Friday. The schedule is:

* Today (Nov. 9): Open enrollment lab, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Freehafer Hall, Room 1-5; open enrollment lab, 12:30-5 p.m., Matthews Hall, Room 301.

* Thursday (Nov. 10): Open enrollment lab, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Freehafer Hall, Room 1-5.

* Friday (Nov. 11): Open enrollment lab, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Freehafer Hall, Room 1-5. This is the last lab opportunity for assistance before enrollment ends.

Human Resources can be contacted at 49-42222, hr@purdue.edu or HRHelp (secure email path) for additional assistance if needed. Faculty and staff at Fort Wayne and Purdue Northwest campuses may contact their campus HR office for assistance.

Remember, employees who do not enroll for 2017 benefits will have default options applied to their coverage for 2017. Here’s what will happen:

Benefits same as in 2016 if enrollment is not completed

* Employees will have the same medical plan in 2017 as they’ve had for 2016. If they’re currently opted out of Purdue medical coverage, they will be opted out again for 2017.

* If they’re in the Purdue Health Plan Plus HSA 1 or the Purdue Health Plan Plus HSA 2 with an active health savings account (HSA), they’ll receive the appropriate University contribution to their HSA, but no contributions of their own will be deducted. They can always begin future HSA contributions during 2017 by making a change through EBenefits.

* If enrolling in the Purdue Health Plan Plus HSA 1 or the Purdue Health Plan Plus HSA 2 but with no active HSA account, no HSA contributions will be made -- employer or employee.

* Any family members they’re covering on their medical plan in 2016 will continue to be covered in 2017, if they still meet eligibility requirements.

* They will have no contributions to a flexible spending account (FSA) (including health care and dependent day care FSAs).

Benefits different from 2016 if enrollment is not completed

* The tobacco certification status of those -- employee and/or spouses -- with 2016 tobacco premium waivers will default to tobacco user status, triggering a $500 per person additional annual tobacco-user premium. To avoid that premium, they will have to show proof of completing an approved tobacco cessation program between Sept. 1 and Nov. 11, 2016. (Non-enrollers currently without a waiver, and paying the premium, will continue in that status.)

* Everyone must make a new dental plan election for 2017. An employee who doesn't will have no dental coverage in 2017, not even preventive dental.

Human Resources encourages employees to enroll today to ensure they have the appropriate coverage for 2017 for themselves and their families.
