Third annual Teaching Academy Day to feature strategies, research

Members of the Purdue University Teaching Academy and graduate teaching assistants will share insights on their teaching during the third annual Teaching Academy Day on Wednesday (Oct. 26).

A full day of 20-minute, concurrent sessions will be presented by 18 academy members starting at 9 a.m. and running through 3:30 p.m. in Stewart Center, Rooms 214A and 214C. A full schedule and presentation abstracts are posted on the academy website. A sampling of speakers and topics includes:

* Brad Benhart, Purdue Polytechnic, discussing a project that partners with local industry to create a “living laboratory” for students.

* Josh Boyd, Brian Lamb School of Communication, on grading student writing effectively.

* Larry DeBoer, Agricultural Economics, on his use of Hotseat and Johnny Carson in the classroom.

* Karen Foli, School of Nursing, discussing teaching and trauma-informed care.

* Marcy Towns sharing the Chemistry digital badge program.

* Tom Turpin, Entomology, sharing how he teaches entomology in a fun way with non-science connections.

* Michael Melloch, Electrical and Computer Engineering, on an exam point recovery strategy he uses to improve student learning.

Posters on scholarship of teaching and learning will also be available throughout the day, presented by Purdue teaching assistants, in Stewart Center, Room 214B. Poster abstracts are also posted on the academy website.

All faculty members, teaching assistants, and other members of the Purdue community interested in innovations in university teaching are invited to attend this free event. Participants may pick any session or stay for the day. There is no registration. Refreshments will be served.
