Registration opens for Discovery Park symposium 'Global Security and Defense Innovation'

On Dec. 1, Discovery Park will host the "Global Security and Defense Innovation Symposium: Exploring the Role of Universities in Meeting Current and Future National Security Imperatives" at Purdue's Ross-Ade Stadium.

At a time when global security threats and instability threaten to pervade and transform societies, this symposium seeks to answer the question: What can world-class research universities do to further advance our understanding of security issues, and to catalyze greater innovation in defense?

Registration is free and open to the public. Space is limited, and those interested in attending the all-day symposium should register by Friday (Nov. 18).

President Mitch Daniels and Tomás Díaz de la Rubia, Discovery Park executive director, will offer opening remarks. Several distinguished speakers will be in attendance, and keynote addresses will be given by:

* Stephen Welby, assistant secretary of defense for research and engineering, U.S. Department of Defense.

* Phil Burkholder, president, Defense Aerospace, Rolls-Royce North America.

* Victor Reis, senior advisor, U.S. Department of Energy.

* Gen. Robin Rand, commander, Air Force Global Strike Command, Barksdale Air Force Base.

* Gen. Larry Welch, former chief of staff, U.S. Air Force and president emeritus, Institute for Defense Analysis.

Panel topics include:

* Rising and Declining States: Russia, China, Iran and North Korea.

* Nuclear Deterrence and Non-Proliferation.

* New Thinking on the “Third Offset.”

* Global Terrorism and Cybersecurity.

Breakfast and registration check-in will begin at 7:30 a.m. in the Ross-Ade Pavilion, Buchanan Room (fifth floor) and conclude with a reception/poster session and dinner at 7 p.m.
