Purdue's United Way volunteers: Laura Poletti

Laura Poletti Laura Poletti

This week, Purdue Today will offer short profiles of Purdue faculty, staff and students who are making a difference by volunteering at a United Way agency or program. Today, Purdue Today is featuring Laura Poletti, a Master of Science (Accounting) student who volunteers at the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. United Way of Greater Lafayette sponsors this program in Tippecanoe County to help qualifying working families and individuals prepare their tax returns for free.

Since the VITA program began in 2011, volunteers have prepared tax returns for 3,300 clients who have saved $643,000 in tax fees.

How long have you volunteered with the VITA program?

I volunteered last tax season with VITA and will be returning this year as an assistant site coordinator.

How did you get involved with VITA?

I became involved with VITA through a class offered at Purdue that I took last year.

What does your volunteer work with the VITA program entail?

My volunteer role involves client intake, completing their tax returns free of charge, and answering any questions they might have.

Why did you decide to volunteer?

I wanted to find a way to not only enhance my taxation knowledge but also serve the community. Because I had such a great experience my first year, I am excited to serve again.

What would you like to tell someone who is considering volunteering at a United Way agency?

I would strongly encourage them to do so. The United Way staff is extremely helpful, the programs are well-organized, and the trainings properly equip volunteers to serve the community

Anything else you’d like to add?

My experience with United Way is that they go above and beyond to serve the community. I loved the opportunity to combine my schoolwork with service.

How to help

The United Way of Greater Lafayette lists volunteer opportunities online on its Volunteer Center page.

Faculty, staff and retirees also may contribute to the Purdue United Way Campaign by going online and logging into the ePledge system. Donors can choose among several methods -- payroll deduction, one-time credit card donation or recurring monthly donations, or by check.
