Affordable Care Act requires dependent Social Security numbers for medical coverage

Human Resources will send direct emails to employees who cover or have covered at least one dependent on a Purdue medical plan in 2016 to verify there is a valid Social Security number in the system for their dependent(s).

The email is being sent in accordance with the Affordable Care Act -- also known as Health Care Reform -- which requires employers to send dependent SSNs to the IRS along with their medical election. Employers are responsible for collecting and validating this information. If an employee’s dependent does not have a SSN, he or she may disregard the message.
