United Way offering Poverty Simulation activity

To help understand the difficulties and choices that face people in poverty, concerned persons can attend a "Poverty Simulation" hosted by Purdue United Way and United Way of Greater Lafayette.

The event will be from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 15 at Kurz Purdue Technology Center, rooms A and B, 1281 Win Hentschel Blvd. in Purdue Research Park. Participation is free, but registration at www.uwlafayette.org/poverty-simulation-kurz is required.

At the simulation, participants will walk through "a day in the life" of families and individuals in poverty and learn about ways United Way is making a difference in their lives.

About 46.7 million people in this country, almost 15 percent of the population, live in poverty. Many more have incomes above the poverty line but still qualify for and depend on programs such as Medicaid and food stamps. This can mean a family of four trying to keep or get affordable housing and survive on less than $30,000 a year, sometimes quite a bit less. Their experiences are far from what most others in the society know.

The simulation is designed to close that gap in awareness and understanding. Participants, in the role of a low-income person, will go through four 15-minute sessions, each representing a month of providing for family and maintaining a home.

One session of this event already has filled to capacity and cannot accept any further registrants. That session will be Tuesday (July 26).
