A number of construction projects, some small and some large, were completed on the West Lafayette campus this summer. One of the larger projects on campus, the new Honors College and Residences facility, received its first occupants a few days ago, and remaining facility work will be completed in the coming weeks.

Construction in other areas of campus will be ongoing over the course of the fall semester, and current construction information is and will continue to be available on the Physical Facilities Construction Notices and Maps webpage.

Pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists should exercise caution in the areas detailed below.

PROJECTS DIRECTLY AFFECTING CAMPUS TRAVEL

Russell Street one-way to two-way conversion

The section of Russell Street between State Street and Stadium Avenue has been converted from one-way to two-way traffic as part of the State Street Redevelopment Project. In conjunction with this work, Purdue also converted the portion of Steven C. Beering Drive between Stadium Avenue and Tower Drive from one-way to two-way traffic.

Third Street and Bechtel Innovation Design Center

Construction of the Bechtel Innovation Design Center, a new student project facility, continues, and the following travel restrictions are in place:

-- Third Street, along with the northern and southern sidewalks, will be closed between Russell and Waldron streets until the end of September.

-- Adjacent street parking along Russell Street is unavailable from Third Street north to Fourth Street.

-- The north-south alley between Russell and Waldron Streets is closed.

-- The sidewalk east of Russell Street from Third Street north to the alley is closed.

Wilmeth Active Learning Center and surrounding area

Construction of the Wilmeth Active Learning Center is ongoing, and additional projects in the area will continue into the fall semester and affect areas near the Roger B. Gatewood Wing of the Mechanical Engineering Building, the Bell Tower, Stanley Coulter Hall, Wetherill Laboratory of Chemistry and Brown Laboratory of Chemistry.

Electrical Engineering Building

The renovation of the Electrical Engineering Building will continue through 2016 and part of 2017. Pedestrians should obey posted signs and use the route along the west side of EE instead of traveling between EE and Northwestern Avenue due to heavy vehicular traffic on Northwestern.

South Russell Street and Creighton Hall of Animal Sciences and Land O’Lakes Center for Experiential Learning and the Purina Pavilion

The ongoing construction of the new Creighton Hall of Animal Sciences and Land O’Lakes Center for Experiential Learning and the Purina Pavilion, a 128,000-square-foot Agricultural and Life Sciences facility, has resulted the following closures and restrictions:

-- The section of South Russell Street adjacent to Herrick Laboratories and the National Soil Erosion Research Lab will be closed from Monday (Aug. 22) until early December, though access to the Harrison Street Parking Garage will be maintained at all times.

-- On-street parking along South Russell Street was reduced and parking was removed from the areas to the south and east of the Life Science Ranges.

-- Some sidewalks in the area have also been closed, and pedestrians should be mindful of detour signs.

Marsteller Street Parking Garage demolition

Due to its age and condition, the Marsteller Street Parking Garage was demolished this summer. A parking lot in the same location will open in October. Alternate parking is available in the Wood Street Parking Garage, Harrison Street Parking Garage, Grant Street Parking Garage and the surface parking lots located south of Pao Hall of Visual and Performing Arts and Dauch Alumni Center.

ONGOING PROJECTS WITH MINIMAL EFFECTS ON CAMPUS TRAVEL

Horticulture Park

The western gateway district drainage improvements project, which is part of the State Street Redevelopment Project, necessitates the closure of Horticulture Park through early December 2016. Access to the Purdue University Early Care and Education Center will be maintained.

Football Performance Complex

Construction of the Football Performance Complex, a three-level structure adjacent to the north end of Mollenkopf Athletic Center, remains underway, and as a result, motorists should expect to see increased truck traffic along Northwestern Avenue through August 2017.

Flex Lab Facility

Work continues on the Flex Lab Facility, a 107,000-square-foot multidisciplinary research facility located at the northwest corner of Nimitz Drive and Gates Road. Though a temporary closure of Gates Road will be necessary later this fall, there should be minimal effects on travel in this area.

River Road, Williams Street and Tapawingo Drive

In addition to the projects outlined above, the intersection of River Road, Williams Street and Tapawingo Drive will remain closed this fall in conjunction with the City of West Lafayette’s Combined Sewer Overflow Relief Project, the details of which may be found at www.riverroadwl.com
