Cholesterol management is focus of upcoming Center for Healthy Living workshop series

The final cholesterol management workshop series for 2016 will take place from noon to 12:50 p.m. Tuesdays from Oct. 4 through Oct. 25 in Haas Hall, Room 111.

The four-week series, led by Kamal Singh, PharmD at the Center for Healthy Living, will take an in-depth look at hyperlipidemia -- which is the medical term for too many lipids (or fats) in the blood and translates to high cholesterol and/or high triglycerides in most people.

Program participants must have a diagnosis of hyperlipidemia as identified by a Center for Healthy Living provider or through self-referral with approved documentation from a community provider.

The primary objective of the program is to educate participants and provide resources to help them manage their condition, stay healthy and prevent complications. Throughout the program, participants will be shown how a variety of lifestyle aspects, including nutrition, medications and physical activity play roles in helping manage hyperlipidemia.

“Simple lifestyle changes that people might not think of on their own can be very helpful not only in treating hyperlipidemia but also in preventing additional complications,” Singh says. “One of my roles in this program is to educate the participants about those simple changes that can be made and show them how it’s possible to do. Things such as increasing your daily fiber intake, getting regular exercise and being able to read food labels in order to choose your best options are among the ways people affected by hyperlipidemia can make an impact on their condition.”

Register by Sept. 29 by calling 49-45505. Limited seats are available for this small group format.

Center for Healthy Living programs and workshops are free for benefits-eligible faculty and staff and for spouses/same-sex domestic partners covered on a Purdue medical plan. Adult dependents covered on a Purdue medical plan as well as benefits-eligible employees who have opted out of a Purdue medical plan also can attend free of charge.

The center offers extended hours -- 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday -- to better serve patients. Lab hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
