Center for Healthy Living provides ongoing support of National Cholesterol Education Month

September is National Cholesterol Education Month, which makes it a prime time to have cholesterol levels checked and make changes to help manage it if it is already high. The Center for Healthy Living on Purdue's West Lafayette campus has ongoing resources to help. Benefits-eligible faculty and staff as well as their spouses/same-sex domestic partners covered on a Purdue health plan have access to all offerings at the center.

According to Kamal Singh, PharmD at the Center for Healthy Living, there are a variety of factors that can affect cholesterol levels that patients have the ability to affect. For instance, diet, weight and physical activity can all play roles in an individual's cholesterol level.

"Eating a lot of red meat and other foods high in saturated fat, being overweight and not being physically active on a regular basis can all affect your cholesterol," Singh says. "Luckily, those things offer you an opportunity to make simple lifestyle changes that can significantly impact your health and help lower your cholesterol, which then lowers your risk for complications such as heart disease or stroke."

Singh also acknowledges that there are factors that patients can't control, such as age, gender and heredity, that can affect cholesterol levels.

The good news is that the center is equipped to help in the areas that allow for change.

Clients have access to a full-service health center with expert services provided by health care professionals. Singh, along with the physicians, nurse practitioners, medical assistants, health coaches, dietitian and phlebotomist, is available for consultation and ongoing monitoring and management of patients' overall health and well-being, including high cholesterol.  The on-site lab provides easy access for lab work such as cholesterol screenings.

In addition, no-cost wellness programs are offered at the center and include an upcoming cholesterol management workshop. The four-week workshop series will meet from noon to 12:50 p.m. Tuesdays from Oct. 4 through Oct. 25 in Haas Hall, Room 111. For more information or to register for the series, call 49-45505.

The center offers extended hours -- open 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday -- to better serve patients. Lab hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Appointments can be made by calling 49-40111 or via the patient portal.

For medical consultation after hours or on weekends, contact the Anthem NurseLine at 888-279-5449 for assistance.
