Travel medicine appointments offered at Center for Healthy Living for personal travel needs

The travel medicine program at the Center for Healthy Living is dedicated to the prevention of illness and injury in persons traveling outside of the United States. Benefits-eligible Purdue employees traveling for pleasure or personal reasons may visit the center for their travel health needs. Health needs related to work-related travel -- paid for by an employee's department -- must be completed by Purdue University Student Health Services (PUSH).

Providers at the Center for Healthy Living can provide all needed vaccinations -- including yellow fever -- as determined during the travel health-related visit. However, travel medicine appointments at the center focus not only on vaccinations but also on patient/traveler education given by a center provider.

Travel medicine services include:

* A review of the patient's travel itinerary and preparation of a patient plan -- during a 40-minute visit -- to include itinerary, vaccinations and/or medications given at the visit and educational information printed from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Yellow Book or Shoreland Travax report about the destination country of travel.

* A comprehensive, evidence-based assessment of risk associated with travel-related illness by a Center for Healthy Living provider.

* Additional services based on the patient's specific needs to the country of travel:

-- Review of prior immunizations to determine ongoing vaccination needs.

-- Review of patient’s comfort level with international travel including psycho-social aspects, family issues, etc.

-- Patient education to minimize risk -- including information on symptoms of potential diseases to ensure prompt evaluation if patient becomes ill.

-- Oral medications for self-treatment of travelers' diarrhea, if needed.

-- Prophylactic medications for altitude sickness and/or malaria, if needed.

-- Administration of vaccinations to known risks of destination as indicated by the CDC. A patient may need to return for subsequent visits if the vaccine is given in a series and/or if the needed vaccine is not routinely stocked.

Travel medicine services are available to benefits-eligible faculty and staff and for spouses/same-sex domestic partners covered on a Purdue medical plan. The travel medicine appointment and any needed vaccinations are covered under Purdue's Anthem medical plans. However, chest X-rays related to exposure to tuberculosis are excluded from the coverage.

To make an appointment, call 49-40111 or use the convenience of the online patient portal. Employees who have not yet registered for the portal are encouraged to do so via the link above. Via the portal, employees have the ability to make appointments, communicate with providers, access personal health records, refill prescriptions and more. Employees can also download the Premise Health app for added convenience.

To better serve patients, the center offers extended hours: 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday. Lab hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. If the need for medical consultation occurs after hours or on weekends, please contact the Anthem nurse line at 888-279-5449 for assistance.
