Purdue Institute for Integrative Neuroscience to hold symposium on traumatic brain injury

The Purdue Institute for Integrative Neuroscience will host a symposium on "From Biomechanics to Behavior: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Explosive and Concussive Traumatic Brain Injury" on May 11 at Burton D. Morgan Center, Room 121.

Lee Brush, former Purdue football player and program manager for the Mayo Clinic Concussion Program, will deliver the keynote speech on "Living with the Fear of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy: An Athlete's Perspective." Opening and closing remarks will be provided by Marietta Harrison, special advisor for strategic initiatives in the Office of the Executive Vice President for Research and Partnerships, and Donna Fekete, director of the Purdue Institute for Integrative Neuroscience, respectively.

The symposium also will include a poster session and the following speakers and presentations:

* Riyi Shi, professor of neuroscience and biomedical engineering, Purdue, "Biomechanics of CNS Trauma, from Cells to Organs."

* Babak Ziaie, professor of electrical and computer engineering and biomedical engineering, Purdue, "Wireless Sensor for Brain Deformation in TBI."

* Eric Nauman, professor of mechanical engineering and biomedical engineering, professor of basic medical sciences (by courtesy), Purdue, "Mathematic Modeling of CNS Trauma."

* Tom Talavage, professor of electrical and computer engineering and biomedical engineering, Purdue, "Sub-Concussive Mild TBI in High School Athletes: A Neuroimaging Study."

* William Truitt, assistant professor of anatomy and cell biology, Indiana University Medical School, "Post-TBI Psychological Impairment in Rats."

* Zheng Ouyang, professor of biomedical engineering, electrical and computer engineering, and chemistry, Purdue, "Emerging Lipid Biomarkers in CNS Trauma and Diseases."

* Edward Bartlett, associate professor of biological science and biomedical engineering, Purdue, "Post-blast Auditory Deficits in Rats: An Electrophysiological Study."

*  Pedro Irazoqui, professor of biomedical engineering and electrical and computer engineering, Purdue, "Neuromodulation of the Inflammation Response Post-TBI."

* R. Timothy Bentley, assistant professor of veterinary clinical sciences, Purdue, "Clinical Large Animal Models of CNS Trauma and Diseases."

* Shelley MacDermid Wadsworth,  director of the Center for Families and executive director of the Family Impact Institute, Purdue, "Traumatic Brain Injury in the Military: Implications for Families and Communities."
