Communicating with teens to be focus of upcoming workshop

Purdue Human Resources will host a family-friendly workshop to discuss strategies to communicate effectively with teenagers from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday (May 19) in Stewart Center, Room 311.

The "Communication: Building a Strong Bridge Between You and Your Children" workshop is an opportunity for anyone raising or supporting someone in raising a teenager to learn why communication in the teenage years is so important. Attendees will discover how communication with a teen affects how they view the world, their self-esteem and how it prepares for life's decisions, as well as learn tips for communicating with a teen and strategies to reduce problems. The workshop will also cover how to discuss tough topics and get through disagreements, as well as how listening to a teenager can be a parent's greatest asset. This training will be presented by Kathy Murray from Purdue Extension.

Registration is available online and is due Wednesday (May 18). Limited seats are available; however, as a response to feedback, Human Resources is pleased to make this and future presentations available in WebEx. Those attending via WebEx should enter "familyfriendly" if prompted for a password when joining the meeting.

The family workshops are open to faculty, staff, students and spouses/same-sex domestic partners. Those attending are encouraged to bring lunch to eat while listening to the presentation. Time for asking questions and networking with other parents and caregivers will be offered.
