Center for Healthy Living series to cover cholesterol management

Kamal Singh, PharmD, at the Center for Healthy Living will lead the second cholesterol management workshop series of 2016. The series will take place from noon to 12:50 p.m. Tuesdays from July 12 through Aug. 2.

The four-week program will take an in-depth look at hyperlipidemia, which is the medical term for too many lipids (or fats) in the blood and translates to high cholesterol and/or high triglycerides in most people.

According to Singh, educating participants to help them manage their condition, stay healthy and prevent complications is the primary objective of the program. Throughout the program, participants will receive information about how a variety of lifestyle aspects, including nutrition, medications and physical activity, play roles in hyperlipidemia.

“There are simple things people can do to help prevent additional complications such as heart disease or stroke,” Singh says. “Increasing your daily fiber intake, getting regular exercise and having your cholesterol levels tested regularly are a few ways to stay on top of hyperlipidemia.”

Program participants must have a diagnosis of hyperlipidemia as identified by a Center for Healthy Living provider or through self-referral with approved documentation from a community provider.

Register by July 7 by calling 49-45505. Limited seats are available for this small group format.

Sessions will take place in the center’s conference room for an increased interactive approach with Singh.

Center for Healthy Living programs and workshops are free for benefits-eligible faculty and staff and for spouses/same-sex domestic partners covered on a Purdue medical plan. Adult dependents covered on a Purdue medical plan as well as benefits-eligible employees who have opted out of a Purdue medical plan also can attend free of charge.

The center offers extended hours -- open 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday -- to better serve patients. Lab hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. For medical consultation after hours or on weekends, contact the Anthem nurse line at 888-279-5449 for assistance.
