Faculty, staff encouraged to participate in RecycleMania

Physical Facilities encourages Purdue faculty and staff members to recycle their unneeded files and paperwork, cans, bottles, and cardboard on campus during this year's RecycleMania Tournament, which is now underway and runs through April 2.

Purdue has participated in RecycleMania since 2010. It is an annual recycling competition among hundreds of colleges and universities across the U.S. and Canada that promotes waste reduction activities.

During the tournament, participating institutions report the amount of materials recycled and trash collected each week. The institutions then are ranked in various categories based on their recycling rate, total volume of recycling and least amount of total waste. The last category combines trash and recycling.

More information about RecycleMania 2016 can be found at www.recyclemaniacs.org. Last year, Purdue ranked 16th out of 308 institutions and first in Indiana in the Gorilla Prize category. Purdue ranked 72nd out of 232 institutions in the Grand Champion category, 67th out of 142 institutions in the Waste Minimization category and 91st out of 307 institutions in the Per Capita Classic.

Questions about Purdue's involvement in the tournament, including which materials are recyclable, should be directed to the Office of University Sustainability at sustainability@purdue.edu.

Purdue's Confidential Document Handling Procedures operating plan should be followed for disposal of all sensitive information. The procedures are at https://www.purdue.edu/securepurdue/docs/careeraccount/Shred_Singlepage.pdf
