Stories and street signs: Upcoming workshop to help parents teach kids to read

October 2, 2015

Human Resources will host a family-friendly workshop focused on supporting reading skills in young children from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 6) in Stewart Center, Room 311. Registration is due Monday (Oct. 5). Limited seats are available.

"Gone Fishing and Story Time: Reading with Young Children" is an opportunity for anyone raising or supporting someone in raising a child to get tips on how to prepare their young child for reading. Attendees will discuss ways to engage with children through stories -- both make-believe and real-life -- and learn how to help them begin recognizing logos and words on street signs, in grocery stores and even on cereal boxes. This seminar will be presented by Kathy Murray from Purdue Extension.

The family workshops are open to faculty, staff, students and spouses/same-sex domestic partners. Those attending are encouraged to bring lunch to eat while listening to the presentation. Time for asking questions and networking with other parents and caregivers will be offered.

Individuals with a Purdue career account can register online for this workshop, while those without a career account can email familyfriendly@purdue.edu to register. Additional information on local family-friendly happenings is available on the Family Friendly Purdue Facebook page
