GIS Day on campus to enhance efforts, launch portal

November 10, 2015

Purdue West Lafayette will celebrate the many and increasing uses of geographic information systems, known as GIS, with a GIS Day college event on Thursday and Friday (Nov. 12-13) focusing on "Launching the Geodata Portal at Purdue."

The event, open to faculty, staff and students, will include a range of speakers and workshops, providing opportunities to exchange research ideas and receive updates on developments in GIS. A committee broadly representing units around campus has planned this eighth annual Purdue event, and Purdue University Libraries continues to play a key role in GIS at Purdue.

The program schedule for Purdue's GIS Day is available at https://stemedhub.org/groups/purduegisday/gisday_2015_college_program and the site provides career lunch and workshop registration information also.

For this year's program, Libraries is working with Esri software and services provider, Purdue's VACCINE team (Visual Analytics for Command, Control, and Interoperability Environments Center), Purdue Facilities Information Services, Purdue Research Services and Support within Research Computing, Indiana GIO (the state's Geographic Information Office) and the Indiana Geographic Information Council.

The program Thursday will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The morning session will be in Stewart Center, Room 218, and will begin with a keynote address at 9-10 a.m. by Frank Garofalo, Esri interactive team manager and Purdue alumnus. The talk's title is "It's all about the Journey … from Brainstorming to Canvas, from Map to App."

Official announcement of the launch of the "Geodata Portal at Purdue" is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. after the career lunch. Afternoon workshops in Hampton and Lilly halls will follow.

The portal was developed over two years based on an open source development project called Open Geoportal. It will allow functions such as downloading GIS data or previewing thousands of geospatial data layers.

On Friday, the events will conclude with a "GIS Project Design: Brainstorming & Ideation Workshop" facilitated by Garofalo and running from 8 a.m. to noon in Grissom Hall, Room 102.

GIS Day is a global observance celebrated locally in many places according to interests and needs. The international 2015 GIS Day is Nov. 18.

Purdue's GIS Day events for 2015 are sponsored by the Office of the Provost, College of Liberal Arts, College of Agriculture, College of Education, College of Engineering, College of Science, Purdue Polytechnic Institute, the Graduate School and Purdue University Libraries.
