2016 benefits open enrollment ends today

November 13, 2015

Benefits-eligible faculty and staff have until 6 p.m. ET today (Nov. 13) to enroll for 2016 benefits. No changes will be accepted after today's deadline. Due to the high volume of individuals who are using the EBenefits system today, please be patient as the speed of the system may be affected.

There is still an opportunity to visit a walk-in lab today until 5 p.m. in Freehafer Hall, Room 1-5. Human Resources staff members are on hand to assist those needing to make changes or complete their enrollment elections. HR encourages everyone to actively enroll to ensure that their benefits meet their needs for 2016.

Those who do not use EBenefits to enroll in a medical plan or to opt out of Purdue medical coverage by the deadline will automatically be enrolled in the same medical plan in 2016 as they've had in 2015. If they're currently opted out of Purdue medical coverage, they'll have no Purdue medical insurance in 2016. Employees will notice costly consequences for next year as well, including the tobacco-user additional premium.

Even if an employee doesn't change plans from last year, he or she must certify the tobacco-user status each year for himself or herself and his or her spouse or same-sex domestic partner (SSDP) if applicable. The certification affects what an employee pays for Purdue medical insurance. If an employee is covered on a Purdue medical plan, he or she will be defaulted into tobacco-user status and will have an additional $500 applied to his or her annual medical premium. If the employee covers a spouse or SSDP on his or her plan, another $500 will be applied (for a total of $1,000) in additional premiums.

Additionally, employee contributions to health savings accounts (HSAs) and flexible spending accounts (FSAs) must be reset annually or no contributions will continue for 2016. Finally, changes to the dental plan arrangements make active enrollment important this year. Purdue is providing preventive dental coverage to those who are covered by a Purdue medical plan and to their covered dependents. Due to this addition, employees have two "buy-up" dental plan options if they desire coverage above and beyond the preventive care coverage. Review details of the preventive and buy-up plan options before making a choice.
