Faculty invited to fall President's Colloquium series starting Thursday

September 11, 2015

The President's Colloquium series for faculty members is resuming this fall with three opportunities for visiting and hearing a faculty presentation. The first colloquium is Thursday (Sept. 17).

Each colloquium, which meets at 4-6 p.m. at Westwood, the Purdue presidential residence, will include a wine and hors d'oeuvre reception after the presentation. Registration is required for each, and a link is available here. The website also has the schedule with descriptions of each presentation.

The series, arranged at the invitation of President Mitch Daniels, is meant to provide timely information about Purdue scholars' research as well as networking opportunities for faculty members from across the University.

At the Sept. 17 colloquium, the topic of "The Power of Calcium" will receive attention from Connie Weaver, head and Distinguished Professor in the Department of Nutrition Science, and George McCabe, professor of statistics and associate dean for academic affairs in the College of Science.

Weaver and McCabe will discuss some of the major issues related to calcium nutrition and several specific examples where an interdisciplinary approach combining nutrition and statistics has been particularly effective.

The fall's other President's Colloquium gatherings:

* Oct. 14 (W) -- Mikhail Atallah, Distinguished Professor of Computer Science, on "Secure Online Interactions: Past, Present and Future."

* Nov. 2 (M) -- Caroline Janney, assistant head and professor, Department of History, on "Forgetting and Remembering the American Civil War."

Presenters for spring semester will be added soon.
