Purdue Libraries to offer data stories seminar and workshop April 20

April 10, 2015

Purdue Libraries will offer a seminar and subsequent workshop on data stories April 20, led by Stacy Rebich Hespanha, a research associate at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) at University of California, Santa Barbara.

The seminar is scheduled for 10 a.m. in HSSE Library, Room 353, located in Stewart Center. The workshop will last from 2 to 4 p.m. in Hicks Undergraduate Library, Room G959.

The seminar and workshop are free and open to the public.

During the seminar, "Data Stories: Researcher Stories Highlight Conflicts and Barriers to Effective Data Management and Sharing," Hespanha will explain how data stories highlight the need for adopting new practices in organizing, managing and preserving data and serve in an educational context for information literacy.

Hespanha also will address situations in which adequate technical solutions don’t exist or aren’t appropriate and stimulate dialogue about the technical, social and cultural solutions most needed to accelerate growth in data management and sharing. Hespanha will explain these situations through the DataONE Data Stories project, where she recently completed her postdoctoral appointment.

The DataONE Data Stories project is focused on collecting researchers’ stories about conflicts and successes they encounter when managing data and making efforts to share or reuse data.

The following workshop, "Using Data Stories to Support Professional Development in Data Management and Sharing," will further delve into the DataONE data management curriculum. Participants will review story-based instructional materials and collaboratively design a new story-based set of discussion questions and learning activities based on a data management topic and data story that participants find relevant to their needs.

The purpose of the workshop is to demonstrate that the use of stories can support higher levels of engagement with the material and foster discussion among researchers about data stewardship and reuse.
