Cancer Culture and Community program seeks classes to partner for fall event

May 8, 2015

Organizers of the Cancer Culture and Community program at Purdue University are seeking fall semester classes to join them in activities leading up to the November symposium centering on the book "The Good Doctor: A Father, a Son, and the Evolution of Medical Ethics," written by Dr. Barron H. Lerner.

Lerner will visit Purdue and deliver the keynote lecture Nov. 12 for the Cancer Culture and Community Colloquium, titled "Playing God? When Doctors Do and Don't Know Best." To participate, faculty, staff and students can contact English professor Richard Johnson-Sheehan at rjohnso@purdue.edu or 765-494-3723.

"Faculty from across any discipline on campus are invited to incorporate Dr. Lerner's works in their undergraduate and graduate-level classes as the starting point for student discussions on chronic disease, aging and medical ethics," Johnson-Sheehan says. "All this will culminate with Dr. Lerner's Purdue lecture and other Cancer Culture and Community-related activities planned for October and November."

Lerner is a professor of medicine and population health at the New York University School of Medicine. He received his master's degree in 1986 and his doctoral degree in history in 1996. He has published extensively in scholarly journals and contributes essays to the Science Times section of The New York Times and its "Well" blog as well as Slate, Atlantic.com and The Huffington Post. He also has appeared on numerous NPR broadcasts, including "Fresh Air," "All Things Considered" and "Science Friday."

Discovery Park's Oncological Sciences Center, in partnership with the College of Liberal Arts, launched the annual Cancer Culture and Community (CCC) initiative in 2007 to explore how the arts and literature provide an outlet of expression to those struggling with cancer.

Kris Swank serves as operations manager for the Oncological Sciences Center and the Cancer Culture and Community program. She can be reached at 765-494-4674 or kswank@purdue.edu.

Since then, organizers have hosted an annual colloquium featuring films, gallery exhibitions, poetry readings and lectures by nationally renowned authors, poets, filmmakers and other creative professionals. The Greater Lafayette community also has been invited to share cancer experiences through poetry, essays and art as well as participate in bone marrow registries.
