YWCA to honor Purdue employee at annual banquet

February 17, 2015

The YWCA will honor Melissa Swathwood, School of Nursing research and faculty secretary, at its 2015 Salute to Women Banquet at 5:30 p.m. March 4 in Purdue Memorial Union.

The annual banquet recognizes women who have made outstanding and inspirational achievements in volunteer and/or professional roles and also demonstrated leadership and role modeling qualities and community involvement.

This year, Swathwood is a recipient of the Women of Distinction award. As a secretary in the School of Nursing, Swathwood provides nursing students and faculty with service opportunities in the community through her “Spread Some Cheer and Volunteer” emails. In addition to her professional role at Purdue, Swathwood also volunteers with the Tippecanoe Child Abuse Prevention Council, where she has served as board president since 2010. Every April, Swathwood works with a variety of community organizations for Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Month. As a member of TCAP, Swathwood implemented the Blue School initiative, which involves schools in raising awareness of child abuse prevention.

Seven other women from Greater Lafayette will also be honored at the 41st annual banquet.

Reservations are $60 per individual or $450 for a table of eight. Reservations must be made by Feb. 21, and they can be made online or by visiting the YWCA at 605 N. Sixth St., Lafayette.
