Town hall to focus on advancing, investing in the life sciences

February 25, 2015

The Office of the Provost and the Office of Research and Partnerships are seeking input and feedback at a town hall meeting to discuss new initiatives in the life sciences.

The Purdue Life Sciences Town Hall will be held at 10-11:30 a.m. March 11 in Rawls Hall, Room 1086.

The concept of boosting Purdue's national reputation by creating "Pillars of Excellence" in the life sciences will be introduced followed by an open discussion centered on what those pillars should look like, what activities should be started, and what resources are needed to distinguish the pillars nationally.

Introductions by Suresh Garimella, executive vice president for research and partnerships, and Deba Dutta, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, will kick off the town hall, followed by brief presentations to encourage discussion around Pillars of Excellence in the life sciences at Purdue.

Graham Cooks, the Henry Bohn Hass Distinguished Professor of Chemistry, will present the Pillars of Excellence concept. Val Watts, professor and interim head of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology, and Richard Kuhn, professor and head of the Department of Biological Sciences and director of the Bindley Bioscience Center in Purdue’s Discovery Park, will present potential pillars focused on the neurosciences and immunology and infectious diseases.

An open discussion will be moderated by Melba Crawford, associate dean of engineering for research and professor of  civil and electrical and computer engineering, and agronomy; Chris Hrycyna, professor of chemistry; Debbie Knapp, the Dolores L. McCall Professor of Comparative Oncology; Karen Plaut, senior associate dean of research and faculty affairs in the College of Agriculture, and professor of animal sciences; and Dorothy Teegarden, professor in the Department of Nutrition Science and associate dean for research and graduate programs in the College of Health and Human Sciences.

All faculty are welcome.
