Purdue, University of the Sunshine Coast sign letter of intent

March 23, 2015

Purdue has formed a partnership with the University of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia, aimed at fostering international cooperation in education and research.

Gary Bertoline, dean of the College of Technology, and Greg Hill, president of the University of the Sunshine Coast, signed a letter of intent on Monday (March 16) during Hill's visit to campus March 16-18. The partnership grew out of ongoing discussions and visits between officials from the Purdue Center for Regional Development and USC.

The partnership seeks to facilitate the exchange of materials in education and research, publications, and academic information; faculty, research scholar and student exchanges; joint research and meetings for education and research; and technical assistance. During Hill's visit, several potential connections were identified in curriculum development with the College of Technology, 3-D visualization, Purdue's Regional Decision Maker interactive mapping platform, Purdue's work in agile strategy, the Tipping Points project and the Center for Global Soundscapes. The University Development Office also will share its takeaways from the 2014 Purdue Day of Giving campaign.

Robert Cox, professor and associate dean for globalization and engagement in the College of Technology, will serve as Purdue's liaison on upcoming projects.

Later this year, Purdue and USC hope to launch a professional education course in new approaches to regional economic development for local government and regional civic leaders throughout Australia. Ed Morrison, regional economic development advisor at PCRD, and Scott Hutcheson, senior associate at PCRD, will teach the course.

Hill's visit also included tours of the West Lafayette and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis campuses and briefings with representatives from PCRD, Purdue's Office of Engagement and the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities.

"This visit is an example of Purdue's growing international footprint in engagement," says Ed Morrison, regional economic development advisor at PCRD. "We have developed models that other universities are finding valuable and want to use on their own campuses, and we are excited to build partnerships that foster the exchange of ideas."
