Faculty, staff encouraged to participate in ongoing Recyclemania Competition

March 10, 2015

Halfway through this year's Recyclemania competition, which runs through March 28, the Office of University Sustainability strongly encourages Purdue faculty and staff members to continue recycling their unneeded files and paperwork.

This year, unlike in previous years, the Big Ten specifically has been engaged in friendly competition over RecycleMania scores. In particular, the University of Iowa, in a RecycleMania video posted to YouTube, has made beating Purdue its explicit goal for this year’s competition. Thus, Purdue is hoping to have as high a recycling rate as possible in order to beat Iowa and the rest of the universities in the Big Ten.

As of this week, Purdue is ranked 11th out of 274 universities nationwide in the Gorilla Prize division (third in the Big Ten, behind Rutgers University and Michigan State University) and 52nd out of 214 universities in the Grand Champion division (second in the Big Ten, behind Rutgers). Purdue is currently ranked first in Indiana in both divisions.

Last year, Purdue ranked fourth out of 336 institutions in the Gorilla Prize division. Purdue ranked 55nd out of 256 institutions in the Grand Champion division. Purdue ranked first in Indiana in both divisions.

More information about Recyclemania 2015 can be found at www.recyclemaniacs.org. Questions about Purdue's involvement in the contest, including which materials are recyclable, should be directed to the Office of University Sustainability at sustainability@purdue.edu.

Purdue's Confidential Document Handling Procedures operating plan should be followed for disposal of all sensitive information. The procedures are at https://www.purdue.edu/securepurdue/docs/careeraccount/Shred_Singlepage.pdf
