Reminder: Changes to overtime policy coming in 2015

October 10, 2014

As a reminder, Purdue will modify its overtime policy, effective Jan. 12. The changes bring Purdue in line with most public and private sector employers, including the state of Indiana and Purdue's peer universities, and act as a recurring cost-avoidance measure.

Under this policy change, nonexempt (paid biweekly) staff will be paid overtime for all hours worked in excess of 40 hours in any single workweek. Paid and unpaid leave days (i.e., vacation, jury duty, sick leave, bereavement leave, etc.), with the exception of University-recognized holidays, will not be counted to determine eligibility for overtime pay. Recognizing University holidays as time worked is beyond what the majority of universities provide; however, Purdue considers its inclusion important.

The change is the second step in a process that began in 2010, in which Purdue moved from a policy that paid overtime for every hour worked over eight each workday.
