Purdue University Scholarship of Engagement Fellows Program 2014-2015

Purpose

The purpose of the Scholarship of Engagement Fellows Program is to foster the development of the scholarship of engagement throughout the faculty in support of the promotion and/or tenure process.

Program description

Four faculty members at the rank of assistant or associate professor will be chosen to participate in this program designed to span the 2014-2015 academic year.  These individuals will work with two senior faculty members with a history of successful scholarship of engagement.  Selection of senior advisors will occur after the Scholarship of Engagement Fellows are identified.  This will facilitate the mentoring process based on the background of the fellows.

Scholarship of Engagement Fellows will receive a stipend of $1,500 to be used for activities related to the scholarship of engagement.

Expectations

Fellows will be expected to actively develop their scholarly engagement portfolio during the fellowship. Fellows will:

  • Identify and describe a project with societal benefit and scholarly output
  • Work with their faculty mentor to develop short (1 year), intermediate (2-4 year), and long term (5+ year) goals for this project.
  • Prepare a submission-ready grant application to support the project by the end of the fellowship.
  • Develop a submission-ready manuscript or submit a manuscript for peer review focused on the scholarship of engagement.

Fellows will also be expected to also assist with planning Purdue’s Annual Scholarship of Engagement Workshop, to be reinstated Spring 2015.

Application process

Scholarship of Engagement Fellow candidates are required to submit a written application for the program.  The application must include the following components:

  1. A brief statement of interest in the Scholarship of Engagement program and why this program will augment the individual’s successful academic career
  2. A brief description of the individual’s proposed engagement project
  3. Examples of past experience with the scholarship of engagement, if applicable
  4. A statement of support from the department head and dean
  5. A curriculum vitae
Applications must be submitted to Julie Gibbs (jagibbs@purdue.edu) by no later than the end of business on October 21, 2014.  Final decisions will be made by a subcommittee of deans representing engagement activities from each of Purdue’s academic schools/colleges.  Final decisions will be communicated to the applicants by November 3, 2014.
