Purdue Libraries to host first Fall 2014 seminar Tuesday

October 24, 2014

Purdue Libraries will hold its first seminar of Fall 2014 featuring Kirk Englehardt, director of research communications at Georgia Institute of Technology, on Tuesday (Oct. 28).

The seminar, free and open to the public, will be 10-11:30 a.m. in Stewart Center, Room 202.

Englehardt's presentation will explore the changes in science communication and the risks and rewards that researchers face when engaging with the public online in external scientific communication, most notably through social media. After addressing the pros and cons of blogging and tweeting science communication, Englehardt will share practical advice for those who wish to become public academics.

External scientific communication is a relatively new way that recent graduates and veteran researchers are finding collaborators and additional funding. In addition, engaging in online communication can lead to a higher profile, both publicly and within the science community, and more citations.

Englehardt has held his director of research communications role at Georgia Tech since 2012, when the Institute acknowledged the need for a research communications strategy. He is responsible for developing and executing Georgia Tech's first integrated strategic marketing and communications plan.

Outside of his role at Georgia Tech, Englehardt is a science communication blogger and communication consultant to public school systems and educational organizations. You can follow him on Facebook at Science Communication Central and on Twitter at @kirkenglehardt.
