In each new college basketball season, teams and their fans are eager to see last year's young contributors become this year's leaders. Part of the excitement of student performance, whether in athletics, drama, music or other activities, is seeing actions demonstrate maturity that stems from practice, coaching and the entirety of college education. Don't Miss It!

NOVEMBER 3-9

Sports week. Just as the weather is in a season of transition, so are Boilermaker sports as fall seasons wind down and winter seasons begin. Let's hope both the Boilermakers and the winter are both very good.
* Football plays Wisconsin at noon Saturday on Military Appreciation Day. $.
* Basketball swishes its way into play with exhibition games -- the men meet Carroll (Montana) at 7 p.m. Friday; the women fend with Findlay at 2 p.m. Sunday. $.
* Men's swimming and diving takes on Western Kentucky at 5 p.m. Friday.
* Purdue hosts the Big Ten Women's Soccer Tournament with action Nov. 5, 7 and 9. $.

Art and Design faculty will show their work in a biennial exhibition in the Patti and Rusty Rueff Galleries in Pao Hall. Details

NOVEMBER 4

The World Film Forum opens its annual window onto global cinema. First up is "White Sun of the Desert." Professor John Hope will be presenter. The series, continuing Nov. 11 and 18, is free with free popcorn (cash bar $). English subtitles on all three films. 7 p.m. Lafayette Theater, 600 Main St, Lafayette. Details

"An Evening with Julian Bond" brings the renowned civil rights activist, politician, professor, former NAACP chairman. 7 p.m. STEW, Loeb Playhouse. Details

NOVEMBER 6

Brian Greene, an acclaimed author and theoretical physicist, will speak in the "If/Then: Decoding our Future," which opened with the "Dawn or Doom" symposium. 7 p.m. Elliott Hall of Music. Seating pass free but required. Details

A PMO concert will feature Purdue Bells, University Choir, Heart & Soul and All Campus & Community Chorale concert at 4:30 p.m. in STEW, Loeb Playhouse. Free. Details

NOVEMBER 10-16

Sports week. Basketball is building a season. Volleyball is building a case for a high NCAA seeding.
* Men's basketball entertains Samford at 7 p.m. Friday and IUPUI at 3 p.m. Sunday. $. Men's basketball
* Volleyball drives to the end of its home season with Maryland on Wednesday, Northwestern on Saturday, and Rutgers on Nov. 19, all at 7 p.m. $. Details

A traditional Veterans Day observance will have speakers, displays and music by the Purduettes. 11 a.m. PMU, Great Hall.

NOVEMBER 14

Béla Fleck, banjo artist extraordinaire, will bring along the Brooklyn Rider string quartet and pick out a few tunes. 8 p.m. STEW, Loeb Playhouse. $. Details

Purdue Theatre's "The Crucible" continues the season's exploration of shadowy places in the human mind. This acclaimed drama is based on the Salem witch trials. 2:30 or 7:30 p.m. on various days. Pao Hall, Nancy T. Hansen Theatre. $. Details

"The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley"

NOVEMBER 17-30

Sports outlook. A few more basketball games hopefully will help prepare the teams to travel over ocean waters to Thanksgiving week invitationals. Wrestling will welcome opponents to the mat. Football will clash with Northwestern in the home finale. Purdue Athletics

NOVEMBER 21 and 23

Purdue Bands and Orchestras continues to present programs of note. All of its jazz bands will perform at 8 p.m. Friday. For a different vibe, the Purdue Wind Ensemble and Fall Concert Band will explore some rather evocative works at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Details
