In each new college basketball season, teams and their fans are eager to see last year's young contributors become this year's leaders. Part of the excitement of student performance, whether in athletics, drama, music or other activities, is seeing actions demonstrate maturity that stems from practice, coaching and the entirety of college education. NOVEMBER 3-9

Sports week. Just as the weather is in a season of transition, so are Boilermaker sports as fall seasons wind down and winter seasons begin. Let's hope both the Boilermakers and the winter are both very good.
* Football plays Wisconsin at noon Saturday on Military Appreciation Day. $.
* Basketball swishes its way into play with exhibition games -- the men meet Carroll (Montana) at 7 p.m. Friday; the women fend with Findlay at 2 p.m. Sunday. $.
* Men's swimming and diving takes on Western Kentucky at 5 p.m. Friday.

The World Film Forum opens its annual window onto global cinema. First up is "White Sun of the Desert." Professor John Hope will be presenter. Purdue Bands and Orchestras continues to present programs of note. All of its jazz bands will perform at 8 p.m. Friday. For a different vibe, the Purdue Wind Ensemble and Fall Concert Band will explore some rather evocative works at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Details
