Child Wellness Day aims to help grad students' kids

October 17, 2014

Children of Purdue graduate students can receive medical exams and shots, and their parents can learn health and nutrition facts, on Friday (Oct. 24) during Child Wellness Day, led by the School of Nursing and Purdue Graduate Student Government.

Child Wellness Day will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Nursing Center for Family Health in Lyles-Porter Hall. Students in several Purdue programs will provide services at no cost:

* Undergraduate and graduate nursing students will provide physical exams, lead and hemoglobin screening, immunizations and health and safety education.

* Nutrition science students will offer nutritional counseling and education.

* Speech, language, and hearing sciences students will provide hearing screenings to children less than 5 years of age. Older children will have hearing screening performed by nursing students. Hearing screenings will be available 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

* SLHS students will provide speech/language screenings from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

* Pharmacy students will have pediatric medication information on hand for parents.

Parents should bring their child's insurance card, if any, and vaccination record. Parents can register their children for Child Wellness Day at https://www2.itap.purdue.edu/bs/WorkLife. The link may be visible only to eligible users once they log in.

Parking is available all day in the Harrison Street Parking Garage adjacent to Lyles-Porter Hall, and the need for an "A" permit has been waived for the day. Also, transportation between Purdue Village Community Center and Lyles-Porter Hall will be available in two forms:

1) PVCC will provide a van with pickup at PVCC and Lyles-Porter Hall each half-hour. Users will need to provide car seats.

2) The Boilermaker Special will provide transportation on each half-hour for a portion of the day.
