Assistive technology available in Freehafer Hall during benefits enrollment

October 28, 2014

Thanks to collaboration between ITaP and Human Resources, assistive technology will be available at all walk-in labs in Freehafer Hall during benefits open enrollment.

A schedule of walk-in labs is provided in the Benefits Open Enrollment Guide and is listed at the Benefits website at www.purdue.edu/hr/Benefits/Medical/OEsessions.html.

According to Dean Brusnighan, assistive technology specialist in ITaP, the following assistive software will be available:

* JAWS: A text-to-speech software that enables people with severe visual impairments to use a computer.

* ZoomText: A screen magnifier software that increases the size of text and images on a computer screen.

* Kurzweil 3000: A text-to-speech software that assists people with learning disabilities. Text on a computer screen is highlighted as it is read aloud.

Those wishing to use JAWS or Kurzweil 3000 must bring their own headphones. None will be supplied, and built-in speakers may not be used for confidentiality reasons.

For more information about the assistive technology, call Brusnighan at 49-49082 or email him at dabrus@purdue.edu.

For open enrollment information, go to www.purdue.edu/benefits/enroll.html or contact Human Resources at 49-42222, hr@purdue.edu or www.purdue.edu/hrhelp.
