Officials on Friday (Sept. 12) unveiled the ultra-energy-efficient ReNEWW house near the Purdue campus.
From left are John Dennis, West Lafayette mayor; Jeff Cardwell, senior adviser and special assistant to Indiana Gov. Mike Pence; David Szczupak, executive vice president of global product organization at Whirlpool Corp.; and Suresh Garimella, Purdue's executive vice president for research and partnerships.
The 1920s vintage home is being retrofitted with the latest in energy-efficient materials and products, while providing valuable experience for graduate students working on the project. ReNEWW stands for Retrofitted Net-Zero Energy, Water and Waste. The house will have energy- and water-saving features and is equipped with solar and geothermal technologies. Systems in the home will harvest waste heat from appliances and "gray water" from showers and sinks.
