'Stayin' Alive' hands-only CPR training set for today

October 1, 2014

The American Heart Association's Hands-Only CPR Mobile Tour comes to Purdue today (Oct. 1). Faculty and staff still have time to join one of the tour's 30-minute training sessions.

The training uses a disco theme because "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees has more than 100 beats per minute, which is the rate at which a person should push on the chest during CPR.

Spaces remain available in all seven sessions being offered today at Córdova Recreational Sports Center's Feature Gym. Sessions are at 10 a.m., 10:45 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3:15 p.m.

Pre-registration at www.surveymonkey.com/s/CPRatPurdue will speed up the check-in process and ensure a spot for the employee. Faculty and staff who prefer simply to stop by will be admitted to any session that is not full. Classes start promptly, and participants should arrive about 10 minutes ahead of time.

Purdue employees may attend in paid status with their supervisor's approval. Everyone who completes the training will be entered into a drawing to win one of seven Fitbits, to be awarded by Anthem.

This is not a CPR certification course. Those looking for a program to become certified in CPR may contact the Recreational Sports Center for information.

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield's corporate foundation has awarded the American Heart Association a three-year, $4.5 million grant to bring the lifesaving hands-only CPR technique to 100 million Americans.

Also today at the Recreational Sports Center, Purdue and Tippecanoe County safety officials will show off their latest resources from 3 to 5 p.m. on the circle drive on the center's west side. The safety event will feature:

* Mobile Command Center tours.
* A drunken-driving simulator that allows individuals to see how they would drive while impaired.
* Registration of bikes and laptops.

The CPR training will take place rain or shine; however, the safety event is outdoors and will be canceled if it is raining.
