Registration now open for Center for Healthy Living weight management series

August 25, 2014

The Center for Healthy Living (CHL) will offer two start dates in September for its 10-week weight management series. The center is taking registrations now.

The program is free and open to all benefits-eligible faculty and staff. Spouses and same-sex domestic partners covered on a Purdue medical plan are also eligible for the program at no charge.

Sandy Galloway, a library assistant in the Engineering Library, found success with the center's program after gaining weight when a medical condition kept her from exercising. "My 30th class reunion was this past summer. I wanted to look good for it, and I needed help," Galloway says.

The program includes a one-on-one meeting with a CHL health coach, plus learning about nutrition, food labels and exercise.

"We were weighed and our waist measurements were taken on the first and last days of the program," Galloway says. "The program was nice because we didn't have to weigh in each week." Beginning with the September offerings, participants may weigh in weekly, if they'd prefer.

Participants will set weekly smart goals and have a chance to brainstorm and share successes with others in the program. "It was great to be in a group of people with the same goal," Galloway says.

Those wishing to participate should call Millie Fenneman, CHL practice administrator, at 49-45505.

Programs starting in September are:

Sept. 11-Nov. 13
Thursdays, noon-12:50 p.m.
Register by Sept. 8.

Sept. 23-Dec. 2
Tuesdays, noon-12:50 p.m. (skip week of Thanksgiving)
Register by Sept. 17.

In addition to the group weight management program, one-on-one health coaching for weight management is available through the center. Individuals who are interested in meeting with a health coach should call the center at 49-40111 to make an appointment.
