'For Profit' performance set for Thursday

September 29, 2014

A free performance of "For Profit," a one-man show based on creator Aaron Calafato's experience as an admissions counselor at a for-profit college, will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 2) in Pao Hall, Nancy T. Hansen Theatre.

As an admissions counselor, Calafato noticed the problem of student debt and decided to make a performance piece about it, followed by audience discussion. Calafato's website calls the production "an inside look at the for-profit educational industry, the 1 trillion-dollar student debt crisis, and a vibrant portrayal of the exploitation of the American student."

Calafato has performed the piece more than 100 times around the country and has garnered attention in the Chronicle of Higher Education, the Huffington Post, and other media outlets. More about Calafato is available on his website.

In addition to the performance, a free Theatre for Social Change Workshop with Calafato and Katherine Burke will be held 1:30-5:30 in Pao Hall, rooms 2154 and 2164. Those interested in participating in the workshop should sign up on theater callboard next to Room 2164 in Pao Hall. Walk-ins for the workshop will be accommodated if space is available. The workshop is limited to 40 participants.

Both events are co-sponsored by Purdue Student Union Board and Purdue's Center for Instructional Excellence in association with Purdue Theatre.
