A big soccer weekend will see the start of Big Ten play with two tough matches: Penn State and Ohio State. $. Details

In "The End of Don't Ask, Don't Tell," Eric Alva, retired U.S. Army staff sergeant and Iraq war veteran, will recount his battles overseas and stateside, culminating in his presence at the bill signing that cemented the change. 7 p.m. STEW, Fowler Hall. Details

"Dawn or Doom"

The Windy City Carnival will sweep into town to help the Black Cultural Center celebrate its fall theme of Trinidad & Tobago -- Caribbean history, folklore and arts. 7 p.m. STEW, Fowler Hall. Details

SEPTEMBER 18

"Dawn or Doom: The New Technology Explosion," a one-day summit packed with profound questions, is part of this year's "If/Then: Decoding Our Future" series. Twenty top Purdue professors and guest speakers; keynote by James Barrat, author and documentary filmmaker, at 5 p.m. Also, films with related themes will be shown on the evenings of September 15-17 and during the day September 18. SEPTEMBER 19-20

Volleyball will be played with a twist and a grudge. The Boilers, ranked in the top 10, will host the Active Ankle Challenge, but the Saturday evening session will be in Mackey Arena so lots of people can come see Purdue tangle with Notre Dame. Details

"Amazing China"

The "Amazing China" traditional dance and song performance will bring a university troupe to the U.S. to honor the 10th anniversary of Confucius Institute worldwide with traditional music, Beijing opera, and folk dances. 7-9 p.m. STEW, Loeb Playhouse. Purdue Bands & Orchestras is going back to back. Its orchestras, with a guest violin soloist, are up at 8 p.m. Saturday, and the wind ensemble and concert band take a world tour on stage at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Details
