Change made to required training, new supplemental training for investigators conducting human subjects research

September 25, 2014

Effective Wednesday (Oct. 1), all personnel listed on a human subjects research study will be required to have current Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) certification before a submission will be accepted for review by the Institutional Review Boards (IRBs).

In order to streamline procedures and reduce submission review times, the Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) is discontinuing the practice of accepting and reviewing IRB submissions on which study personnel do not have current CITI certification. Purdue requires all individuals involved in the conduct of human subjects research to complete basic level (initial) human subject protections training (CITI) and to recertify every five years. Investigators are responsible for ensuring that all study personnel have current CITI certification.

Purdue investigators can now access supplemental training opportunities on the HRPP’s website. "Navigating the IRB Review Process" is an audio-recorded PowerPoint tutorial presented in five parts: Getting Started, Exempt Research, Non-Exempt Research, Informed Consent, and Post-Approval Requirements.

The HRPP is developing a variety of training opportunities as part of its ongoing efforts to provide comprehensive resources that address the needs of all investigators -- social-behavioral researchers as well as biomedical researchers. New content will be posted and announced as it becomes available.

The HRPP welcomes suggestions from the Purdue research community on both topics and methods of delivery for future training.

Questions and suggestions should be directed to the HRPP office at 49-45942 or send email to irb@purdue.edu.
