An Indiana State University professor and Winston Churchill scholar gave a lecture to Honors College students Wednesday during a campus visit that included the executive director of the Churchill Centre.

The visit by Michael Shelden and Lee Pollock was part of an overall Honors College effort to bring national experts on a variety of academic topics to Purdue's campus for the benefit of students.

Shelden, professor of English at Indiana State, gave the lecture to about 100 honors students at 4 p.m. at Westwood, the Purdue presidential residence.

Shelden is the author of "Young Titan: The Making of Winston Churchill," a biography that explores Churchill's early career and its influence on his later achievements. Churchill was the United Kingdom's prime minister during 1940-45 and 1951-55.

President Mitch Daniels and Pollock, executive director of the Churchill Centre in Downers Grove, Ill., introduced Shelden.

Established in 1994 as a successor to the International Churchill Society of the United States, the Churchill Centre seeks to foster leadership, statesmanship, vision, courage and boldness worldwide through the thoughts, words, works and deeds of Winston Churchill, according to its website.

Before the lecture, Shelden and Pollock had lunch with several of Purdue's faculty members, undergraduate and graduate students. A closed reception followed the lecture.
