Daniels lifted up Purdue on national stage this fall

December 2013

President Mitch Daniels this fall carried the message of Purdue's achievements and plans across the country at live audience events, through media interviews and in printed op-ed pieces. His travels took him to Washington, D.C.; New York; and points throughout Indiana.

In the nation's capital, he drew attention to Purdue and higher education issues -- including the importance of research and technology transfer -- in appearances including these in September:

* Higher Education Innovation Summit, hosted by the National Press Club.

* Bloomberg Newsmaker Luncheon.

* Business Roundtable meeting with Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and  Fortune 100 CEOs from around the country.

* National board of directors of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Also in September, Daniels was a featured panelist in New York at the Time Summit on Higher Education, which focused on the American university as a research laboratory for the nation. Co-panelists were Condoleezza Rice, business leader Norm Augustine and presidential adviser John Holdren.

Highlights of his television appearances include CNBC's "Squawk Box" and MSNBC's "The Daily Rundown" program hosted by Chuck Todd.

In October, Daniels served as a panelist at the NBC Education Nation Summit in New York, where he and other higher education leaders debated topics with host Chelsea Clinton. Then it was back to the Midwest where he made a daylong visit to Southern Indiana. This included a visit with students at Evansville North High School, a luncheon address at the Rotary Club of Evansville, and a tour of the Toyota manufacturing plant in Princeton.

In November, he returned to Washington and gave the opening address to the annual meeting of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, a gathering of presidents and top leaders from most of the nation's leading universities.

When asked about the many appearance requests his office receives and the opportunities these present for Purdue, Daniels said, "I look for those where I can place Purdue in front of especially prestigious and influential national audiences, and to argue the case for academic research and for excellence in higher education, particularly in the STEM disciplines."

"When these high-quality opportunities present themselves, it seems a chance to add some value and I feel a responsibility to do the ones I can fit in."
