Cholesterol management, diabetes and sleep are the topics of Center for Healthy Living workshops in October and November.
All workshops take place at the Center for Healthy Living in the Purdue West Shopping Plaza, 1400 W. State St. To register, call Millie Fenneman, practice administrator, at 49-40111. Limited seats are available.
Successful Cholesterol Management
Oct. 21 (Th). 12:10 to 12:50 p.m.
Have you recently been diagnosed with high cholesterol? Or are you working to reduce your chances of a diagnosis by trying to keep your numbers in check? Come learn about what cholesterol is, where it comes from, and what types of screenings are available. We will also discuss how to keep your numbers low by eating healthy, being active and investigating medication options. Instructor: Suzanne Rossiter, BSN, MSN.
Diabetes 101 Series
Oct. 30 and Nov. 6, 13 and 20 (W). 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
During this four-week Type 2 diabetes basics series, participants will learn current clinical information of diabetes management, including a list of diabetes medications, insulin action times and other treatment options. Physical activity is also emphasized in each session, and participants will learn how regular activity positively affects glucose levels and heart health.
Important information on pre-diabetes is also provided because studies show that many people with pre-diabetes go on to develop diabetes within 10 years. Information contains ideas that participants can follow to prevent or delay the onset of Type 2 diabetes.
Sample restaurant menu meals will be used to help participants learn about carbohydrate counting, dietary fiber and its importance, and sodium and transfat information. Instructor: Rosemary Benjamin, RD, CD, CDE.
Sleep, Stress and HormonesNov. 14 (Th). 12:10 to 12:50 p.m.
Do you ever wonder how lack of sleep affects your health and well-being? Did you know there is a connection between sleep, stress and hormones? In this workshop, participants will learn about the importance of sleep on learning and memory, metabolism and weight, safety, mood, heart health, and the immune system. Instructor: Cheryl Laszynski, BSN, MBA.
