Stickers promoting energy conservation awareness around campus

October 8, 2010

Stickers carrying the "Boiler Up, Power Down" slogan are being placed across campus to increase energy conservation awareness, help reduce electric consumption and lower purchased utilities costs.

The Sustaining New Synergies task force, in collaboration with student groups, developed the idea to place stickers in classrooms, administrative offices, campus residences and athletic facilities across campus.

Student volunteers, faculty and staff have placed nearly 2,000 student-designed stickers around campus. The campaign goal is 10,000 stickers.

Two types of stickers -- those fitting over traditional flip switches and those placed beside keypad-like switches -- are targeted for rooms without motion sensors and those with lights that can be turned off without security concerns.

"Each light may not seem like much, but there is power in numbers, and we have a lot of lights," says Erick Van Meter, director of utilities. "Campus conservation efforts on this front have the potential to save $50,000 to $100,000 in annual operating expense."
