Presentations on voluntary benefits begin Tuesday

Faculty and staff have numerous opportunities this week to learn more about Purdue's lineup of voluntary benefits. Participating companies are offering information sessions Tuesday and Thursday, and hosting a voluntary benefits fair from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

Presentations will be in Stewart Center, and the fair will be in the East and West Faculty Lounges at Purdue Memorial Union. For a schedule of presentations, see www.purdue.edu/hr/Benefits/voluntary.html.

Voluntary benefits provide the value of group insurance rates and the convenience of payroll deduction on a variety of extra benefits that are not part of Purdue's core lineup.

* The critical illness insurance offered by Unum could benefit employees who have a family history, or another elevated risk, of developing the illnesses covered by the plan. The coverage supplements any benefits from the employee's medical and disability insurance.

* The accident insurance benefit through Trustmark is paid directly to the employee and can be used as the employee wishes, including using it toward copays, deductibles or coinsurance.

* Trustmark also offers a universal life insurance plan. Because a universal life policy is an investment vehicle, as well as a life insurance policy, only people who feel they will need life insurance into their later years would benefit from this type of insurance.
