Disability employment month to bring OIE sessions

The Office of Institutional Equity is offering the following opportunities in recognition and celebration of National Disability Employment Awareness Month. This year's theme is "Profit by Investing in Workers with Disabilities."

The Transition to Employment for Veterans with Injuries and Disabilities
Co-presented by the Wounded Warrior Education & Employment Initiative
"An initiative of the Department of Defense to improve, expand, and synchronize the education and employment opportunities for wounded, ill, and injured service-members."

Oct. 4 (Tu) --1:30-3 p.m. Stewart Center, Room 318
During this workshop, disabled veteran and employer perspectives on veterans' employment will be discussed. Common obstacles, opportunities, and strategies to maximizing disabled veterans in the work place will be covered. Employers and veterans are encouraged to attend.

Recruiting, Hiring, and Retaining Workers with Disabilities
Oct. 12 (W) -- 1:30-3 p.m. Stewart Center, Room 318
Employers will learn the benefits to hiring people with disabilities during this workshop. Employers will also gain insight into how to recruit, hire, and retain individuals with disabilities. 
 
ADA Audio Conference
Oct. 18 (Tu) -- 2-3:30 p.m. Young Hall, Room 1057
This session is the first of the 2011-12 ADA Audio Conference Series presented by the Great Lakes ADA and Accessible IT Center. The program is designed to offer individuals advanced information on various ADA-related issues.

Session I: Road Map to Success

This seminar will discuss the rights and responsibilities of employees with disabilities in the workplace.


The Ins and Outs of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Vocational Rehabilitation
Co-presented by Vocational Rehabilitation Services
Oct. 26 (W) -- 10-11:30 a.m. Stewart Center, Room 320
In this workshop, learn what employers are required to do under the Americans with Disabilities Act and how Vocational Rehabilitation Services can assist employees with obtaining devices and services not covered under the ADA.


The Intersection of Disability and Work
Session II: Merging into the Networking Lane
Co-presented by Disability Resource Center and Center for Career Opportunities
Oct. 26 (W) -- 4:30-6 p.m. Stewart Center, Room 310
During this networking reception, learn tips on navigating networking etiquette from Anthony Cawdron, Westwood Event Coordinator and Instructor in Hospitality and Tourism Management, and interact with recruiters.

Session III: The Road Already Traveled

Nov. 3 (W) -- 4:30-6 p.m. Stewart Center, Room 310
This panel discussion will host Purdue alumni with disabilities who will share stories of successfully navigating into the employment lane.
 
The Americans with Disabilities Act and the ADA Amendments Act Briefing
These sessions are designed to provide participants with a better understanding of the ADA and the ADA Amendments Act, a supervisor's or employee's responsibilities at Purdue, a greater understanding of how to interact with employees with disabilities, and campus resources that can assist with reasonable accommodation requests.
